Edmund Najera was a Mexican-American composer who was born on December 13, 1954, in San Antonio, Texas. He was the youngest of four children and grew up in a musical family. His father was a mariachi musician, and his mother was a singer. Najera began playing the guitar at a young age and later learned to play the piano. Najera's interest in classical music began when he was in high school. He was inspired by the works of composers such as Beethoven, Mozart, and Bach. He went on to study music at the University of Texas at Austin, where he earned a Bachelor of Music degree in composition. After completing his studies, Najera moved to New York City to pursue a career in music. He worked as a freelance composer and arranger, writing music for television and film. He also composed works for the concert stage, including orchestral pieces, chamber music, and vocal music. One of Najera's early works was a piece for string quartet called "Quartet No. 1." The piece was premiered in 1982 by the Kronos Quartet and received critical acclaim. The New York Times called it "a work of great beauty and emotional depth." In 1985, Najera composed a piece for orchestra called "Symphony No. 1." The piece was premiered by the New York Philharmonic under the direction of Leonard Bernstein. The symphony was well-received, and Najera was praised for his use of traditional forms and his ability to create a unique sound. Najera's music often drew on his Mexican-American heritage. He incorporated elements of mariachi music and other traditional Mexican music into his compositions. One of his most famous works is "Concierto Mexicano," a piece for guitar and orchestra that was premiered in 1992 by the Los Angeles Philharmonic. The piece features virtuosic guitar playing and incorporates elements of Mexican folk music. In addition to his work as a composer, Najera was also a teacher. He taught composition at the Manhattan School of Music and the Juilliard School. He was known for his dedication to his students and his ability to inspire them to create their own unique works. Tragically, Najera's life was cut short when he died of cancer on December 22, 1994, at the age of 40.
