Born on August 31, 1937, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Pellerite grew up in a family of musicians, which played a significant role in shaping his musical career. Pellerite's love for music began at an early age, and he started playing the flute when he was just nine years old. He received his early music education from his father, who was a professional flutist and a music teacher. Pellerite's father recognized his son's talent and encouraged him to pursue a career in music. Pellerite's musical journey took him to the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, where he earned his Bachelor of Music degree in 1959. He then went on to study at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York, where he received his Master of Music degree in 1961. During his time at Eastman, Pellerite studied under the tutelage of renowned flutist Joseph Mariano, who had a significant influence on his musical style and technique. After completing his studies, Pellerite began his professional career as a flutist, performing with various orchestras and ensembles across the United States. He also served as the principal flutist for the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra from 1962 to 1964. In 1964, Pellerite joined the faculty at Indiana University's Jacobs School of Music, where he taught for over 40 years. Pellerite's teaching career was marked by his dedication to his students and his commitment to excellence. He was known for his rigorous teaching style, which emphasized the importance of technique, tone, and musical expression. Many of his students went on to become successful flutists, and Pellerite's influence can be seen in their playing styles. In addition to his teaching career, Pellerite was also an accomplished author and composer. He wrote several books on flute technique and pedagogy, including "The Advanced Flutist" and "The Modern Flutist." He also composed several pieces for the flute, including "Sonata for Flute and Piano" and "Three Pieces for Flute and Piano."
