Seattle Chamber Players is a renowned classical music ensemble that has been captivating audiences with their unique and innovative performances for over 30 years. The group was founded in 1989 by clarinetist Laura DeLuca, cellist David Sabee, and pianist Paul Taub, who were all faculty members at the University of Washington School of Music. The trio initially formed the group as a way to explore and perform contemporary classical music, which was not being widely played at the time. They quickly gained a reputation for their adventurous programming and dynamic performances, and soon expanded their ensemble to include other musicians. Over the years, Seattle Chamber Players has collaborated with a wide range of composers, performers, and artists, including John Cage, Philip Glass, and Meredith Monk. They have also commissioned and premiered numerous new works by emerging and established composers, further cementing their reputation as champions of contemporary classical music. One of the group's most notable performances was their 1992 concert at the Seattle Opera House, which featured a program of works by John Cage, Morton Feldman, and Earle Brown. The concert was a critical and commercial success, and helped to establish Seattle Chamber Players as one of the leading contemporary classical ensembles in the Pacific Northwest. In addition to their performances, Seattle Chamber Players has also been recognized for their educational and outreach efforts. They have worked with numerous schools and community organizations to promote classical music and provide opportunities for young musicians to learn and perform. Over the years, Seattle Chamber Players has received numerous awards and accolades for their contributions to the classical music world. In 1995, they were awarded the ASCAP/Chamber Music America Award for Adventurous Programming, and in 2001 they received the Seattle Mayor's Arts Award for Excellence in the Arts. Despite the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, Seattle Chamber Players has continued to innovate and adapt, finding new ways to connect with audiences and promote classical music. They have launched a series of virtual concerts and educational programs, and are looking forward to returning to live performances as soon as it is safe to do so. Overall, Seattle Chamber Players has had a profound impact on the classical music world, pushing the boundaries of what is possible and inspiring countless musicians and audiences along the way.
