He grew up in a musical family, with his mother being a pianist and his father a trumpet player. Joyce started playing the piano at the age of five and later learned to play the trumpet and guitar. He attended the University of South Dakota, where he earned a Bachelor of Music degree in composition and trumpet performance. He then went on to earn a Master of Music degree in composition from the University of Michigan. Joyce's compositions are known for their emotional depth and expressive power. He draws inspiration from a wide range of sources, including literature, visual art, and nature. His music is often characterized by its use of rich harmonies, intricate textures, and evocative melodies. One of Joyce's early works, "The Unseen," was written for string quartet and premiered in 2002.
