Iona Petcu-Colan is a Romanian classical pianist who has gained international recognition for her exceptional talent and musicality. Born on December 22, 1992, in the city of Craiova, Romania, Iona showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of six. Her parents, both music teachers, recognized her potential and encouraged her to pursue a career in music. Iona's musical education began at the George Enescu Music School in Craiova, where she studied under the guidance of Professor Mariana Ionescu. She quickly distinguished herself as a gifted pianist, winning numerous awards and competitions, including first prize at the National Piano Competition in Bucharest in 2005 and 2007. In 2008, Iona was accepted into the prestigious National University of Music in Bucharest, where she continued her studies with Professor Viniciu Moroianu. During her time at the university, she participated in masterclasses with renowned pianists such as Boris Berman, Paul Badura-Skoda, and Pascal Devoyon, further honing her skills and musical interpretation. In 2012, Iona graduated with honors from the National University of Music and was awarded a scholarship to continue her studies at the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln in Germany. There, she studied with Professor Pierre-Laurent Aimard, one of the most respected pianists of his generation. Under his guidance, Iona developed a deeper understanding of the music she played and refined her technique to a level of virtuosity. Iona's talent and hard work paid off when she won first prize at the International Piano Competition in San Marino in 2014. This was a significant achievement for the young pianist, as the competition was highly competitive and attracted some of the world's most talented pianists. Since then, Iona has performed in some of the most prestigious concert halls in Europe, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the Konzerthaus Berlin, the Cologne Philharmonic, and the Romanian Athenaeum. She has also been invited to perform at numerous festivals, including the George Enescu Festival in Bucharest, the Beethovenfest in Bonn, and the Festival de la Roque d'Anthéron in France. Iona's repertoire is vast and includes works by some of the greatest composers in history, such as Bach, Beethoven, Chopin, Liszt, and Debussy. She is particularly known for her interpretations of the music of Franz Liszt, a composer who has had a significant influence on her musical development. In addition to her solo performances, Iona has also collaborated with some of the world's leading orchestras, including the Berlin Symphony Orchestra, the Cologne Chamber Orchestra, and the Romanian National Radio Orchestra. She has worked with conductors such as Cristian Mandeal, Gabriel Bebeselea, and Gerd Albrecht, among others. Iona's talent and dedication have not gone unnoticed, and she has received numerous awards and accolades throughout her career. In addition to her first prize at the International Piano Competition in San Marino, she has also won first prize at the International Piano Competition in Bucharest and the International Piano Competition in Sinaia. In 2018, Iona was awarded the title of "Cultural Ambassador of Romania" by the Romanian Ministry of Culture, in recognition of her contributions to the promotion of Romanian culture and music on the international stage.
