The orchestra was founded in 1923 by the Dutch broadcasting company AVRO, and it quickly became one of the most prominent orchestras in the country. The AVRO Hilversum Orchestra was led by a number of distinguished conductors throughout its history, including Willem van Otterloo, who served as the orchestra's principal conductor from 1949 to 1973. Other notable conductors who worked with the orchestra include Bernard Haitink, Jean Fournet, and Hans Vonk. Over the years, the AVRO Hilversum Orchestra performed a wide range of classical music repertoire, including works by composers such as Beethoven, Mozart, Brahms, and Mahler. The orchestra also premiered a number of new works by Dutch composers, including Henk Badings, Rudolf Escher, and Ton de Leeuw. One of the highlights of the AVRO Hilversum Orchestra's history was its performance at the 1958 World Expo in Brussels, where the orchestra played for an audience of over 10,000 people. The orchestra also performed at a number of other major international festivals, including the Edinburgh Festival and the Salzburg Festival. In addition to its live performances, the AVRO Hilversum Orchestra also made a number of recordings throughout its history.
