United States of AmericaBirth:March 10, 1872 in Burton-in-Kendal, Westmorland, EnglandDeath:September 6, 1956 in Chicago, ILPeriod:ModernGenre:KeyboardFelix Borowski was a British composer, conductor, and music educator of Polish descent. He was born on March 10, 1872, in Birkenhead, England, to a family of musicians. His father, Alfred Borowski, was a cellist and conductor, and his mother, Marie Krebs, was a pianist and composer. Felix showed an early interest in music and began studying the piano and violin at a young age. Borowski's musical education began at the Royal Academy of Music in London, where he studied composition with Frederick Corder and piano with Tobias Matthay. He later continued his studies in Berlin with the renowned pianist and pedagogue, Theodor Leschetizky. Borowski's early compositions were influenced by the German Romantic tradition, particularly the music of Brahms and Schumann. In 1894, Borowski was appointed as a professor of piano at the Royal Academy of Music, where he remained for over 40 years. He also served as the conductor of the Academy's orchestra and choir, and was a highly respected music educator. Many of his students went on to have successful careers in music, including the composer Benjamin Britten. Borowski's compositional output was diverse, encompassing orchestral works, chamber music, songs, and piano music. His most famous work is his Suite in D for violin and piano, which was composed in 1905 and has remained a popular piece in the violin repertoire. The suite consists of four movements, each with a distinct character and mood. The first movement, a lively and rhythmic gavotte, is followed by a lyrical and expressive romance. The third movement, a scherzo, is playful and light-hearted, while the final movement, a tarantella, is fast and energetic. Another notable work by Borowski is his Piano Quintet in C minor, which was composed in 1907. The quintet is a dramatic and intense work, with a powerful opening movement that features a driving rhythm and soaring melodies. The second movement is a hauntingly beautiful adagio, while the third movement is a lively and playful scherzo. The final movement is a tour-de-force of virtuosity, with a thrilling coda that brings the work to a dramatic close. Borowski's other works include his Symphony in C minor, which was composed in 1899 and premiered at the Crystal Palace in London. The symphony is a grand and ambitious work, with a sweeping opening movement that features a majestic theme played by the brass section. The second movement is a lyrical and expressive adagio, while the third movement is a lively and rhythmic scherzo. The final movement is a triumphant and exuberant finale, with a soaring melody played by the strings. Borowski also composed a number of songs, including settings of poems by Robert Browning and Christina Rossetti. His piano music includes a set of six character pieces, which are charming and whimsical works that showcase his skill as a pianist and composer. In addition to his work as a composer and educator, Borowski was also a respected conductor. He conducted the London Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Hallé Orchestra, among others. He was known for his meticulous attention to detail and his ability to bring out the best in his musicians. Borowski died on September 5, 1956, in London, at the age of 84. He left behind a legacy as a composer, conductor, and educator, and his music continues to be performed and enjoyed today.More....
