Bill Ashton is a renowned British jazz musician, composer, and educator who has made significant contributions to the world of classical music. He was born on 13th May 1947 in London, England, and grew up in a family of musicians. His father was a jazz pianist, and his mother was a classical pianist, which exposed him to different genres of music from a young age. Ashton started playing the piano at the age of six and later learned to play the trumpet and saxophone. He attended the Royal Academy of Music in London, where he studied composition and arranging. After completing his studies, he began his career as a professional musician, playing in various jazz bands and orchestras. In 1971, Ashton founded the National Youth Jazz Orchestra (NYJO), which has become one of the most prestigious jazz ensembles in the world. The orchestra has produced many talented musicians, including Guy Barker, Mark Nightingale, and Gerard Presencer. Ashton served as the musical director of NYJO for over 20 years, during which time he helped to shape the careers of many young musicians. Ashton's compositions and arrangements have been performed by some of the world's leading orchestras, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, and the BBC Concert Orchestra. He has also worked with many renowned jazz musicians, including Cleo Laine, John Dankworth, and Stan Tracey. One of Ashton's most significant achievements was his collaboration with the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) in 1989. He composed the music for the RSC's production of "The Tempest," which was performed at the Barbican Centre in London. The production was a critical and commercial success, and Ashton's music received widespread acclaim. Ashton has also received numerous awards and accolades throughout his career. In 1994, he was awarded the MBE (Member of the Order of the British Empire) for his services to music. He has also received the John Dankworth Award for Services to Jazz Education and the British Jazz Award for Best Big Band Arranger. He has taught at the Royal Academy of Music, the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, and the Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance.
