Winifred Attwell was a South African-born pianist and composer who became one of the most popular and successful performers of her time. Born on February 25, 1914, in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa, Attwell showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of five. Her parents recognized her talent and encouraged her to pursue a career in music. Attwell's early musical education was provided by her mother, who was a piano teacher. She quickly developed her skills and began performing in public at the age of nine. By the time she was a teenager, Attwell was already a well-known performer in South Africa, playing in concerts and on the radio. In 1933, Attwell moved to London to further her musical education. She studied at the Royal Academy of Music and the Trinity College of Music, where she honed her skills as a pianist and composer. Attwell's talent and hard work paid off, and she won several awards and scholarships during her time in London. Attwell's big break came in 1946 when she recorded a medley of popular songs called "The Poor People of Paris." The recording became an instant hit and launched Attwell's career as a recording artist. Over the next few years, Attwell recorded dozens of albums, many of which featured her own compositions. Attwell's music was a unique blend of classical, jazz, and popular styles. She was known for her lively and energetic performances, which often included her signature "stride" piano style. Attwell's music was popular with audiences of all ages and backgrounds, and she became one of the most successful and beloved performers of her time. Attwell's success as a recording artist led to numerous television and radio appearances, as well as concert tours around the world. She performed for royalty, heads of state, and celebrities, and was widely regarded as one of the greatest pianists of her generation. Attwell's career was not without its challenges, however. As a black woman in a predominantly white industry, she faced discrimination and prejudice throughout her career. Despite these obstacles, Attwell remained determined and focused on her music, and her talent and hard work ultimately won out. Attwell continued to perform and record music well into her later years. She passed away on January 5, 1968, at the age of 53, but her music and legacy live on. Today, she is remembered as one of the greatest pianists and composers of the 20th century, and her music continues to inspire and delight audiences around the world.
