Roshanne Etezady is a contemporary classical music composer who was born in 1973 in Rochester, New York. She grew up in a family of musicians, with her father being a composer and her mother a pianist. Etezady began playing the piano at a young age and later learned to play the drums and percussion instruments. Etezady attended the Eastman School of Music at the University of Rochester, where she earned a Bachelor of Music degree in percussion performance. She then went on to earn a Master of Music degree in composition from the University of Michigan. During her time at the University of Michigan, Etezady studied with William Bolcom, Michael Daugherty, and Evan Chambers. Etezady's compositions are known for their rhythmic complexity and use of percussion instruments. Her works have been performed by numerous orchestras and ensembles, including the New York Philharmonic, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. One of Etezady's most well-known works is her percussion concerto entitled "Anahita," which was commissioned by the Los Angeles Philharmonic and premiered in 2006. The concerto is named after the ancient Persian goddess of water and fertility and features a solo percussionist playing a variety of instruments, including marimba, vibraphone, and drums. Another notable work by Etezady is her orchestral piece "Glacier," which was commissioned by the New York Philharmonic and premiered in 2011. The piece is inspired by the movement and sounds of glaciers and features a large percussion section. Etezady has also composed works for chamber ensembles, including her string quartet "Keen," which was commissioned by the Kronos Quartet and premiered in 2014. The piece is based on the traditional Irish funeral lament and features intricate rhythms and harmonies. In addition to her work as a composer, Etezady is also a professor of music composition at the University of Michigan. She has received numerous awards and honors for her compositions, including the Rome Prize in 2011 and the Guggenheim Fellowship in 2018.
