Skye Consort is a classical music ensemble that specializes in performing traditional Scottish and Irish music. The group was founded in 2003 by two musicians, Ronn McFarlane and Al Petteway, who shared a passion for the music of their ancestral homelands. Ronn McFarlane is a renowned lutenist who has performed with many of the world's leading early music ensembles. He has also released several solo albums and has won numerous awards for his work. Al Petteway is a guitarist and composer who has recorded over a dozen albums of original music and has won several Grammy Awards for his work in the New Age and folk music genres. Together, McFarlane and Petteway formed Skye Consort with the goal of exploring the rich musical traditions of Scotland and Ireland. They were soon joined by several other musicians, including Chris Norman on wooden flute and bagpipes, Robin Bullock on guitar and mandolin, and Andrea Hoag on fiddle. The ensemble quickly gained a reputation for their virtuosic performances and their ability to bring new life to traditional music. They have performed at major festivals and concert halls throughout the United States and Europe, including the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., and the Edinburgh International Festival in Scotland. One of Skye Consort's most notable performances was their appearance at the Smithsonian Folklife Festival in 2008. The festival, which celebrates the cultural heritage of different regions and communities, featured Skye Consort as part of its program on Scotland. The ensemble's performance was widely praised for its energy, skill, and authenticity. Skye Consort has also released several albums of their music, including "Lutes, Guitars, and Other Strings," "Celtic Roots," and "Live in Spain." Their recordings have received critical acclaim and have been featured on radio programs and podcasts around the world. In addition to their performances and recordings, Skye Consort has also been recognized with several awards and honors. In 2007, they were awarded the Independent Music Award for Best World Traditional Album for their album "Celtic Roots." They have also been nominated for several other awards, including the Canadian Folk Music Award and the International Acoustic Music Award. Despite their success, Skye Consort remains committed to their mission of preserving and promoting traditional Scottish and Irish music. They continue to perform and record new music, and they have inspired a new generation of musicians to explore the rich musical heritage of these cultures.
