She quickly gained a reputation for her innovative and experimental approach to music, and her works were performed by some of the leading orchestras and ensembles in the UK and Europe. One of Bauld's early works, "The Garden of Earthly Delights," was premiered by the London Sinfonietta in 1979. The piece, which was inspired by the painting of the same name by Hieronymus Bosch, features a complex and intricate score that incorporates a wide range of musical styles and techniques. In the 1980s, Bauld began to focus more on composition and musicology. She earned a PhD in musicology from the University of London in 1986, and went on to publish several books and articles on music theory and analysis. Bauld's compositions from this period include "The Four Elements," a suite for piano that explores the themes of earth, air, fire, and water, and "The Seven Deadly Sins," a choral work that sets texts from medieval morality plays to music. In the 1990s, Bauld continued to explore new musical forms and styles. She composed several works for chamber ensembles, including "The Book of Mirrors," a piece for string quartet that was inspired by the writings of Jorge Luis Borges. Bauld also began to incorporate electronic music into her compositions, using synthesizers and other electronic instruments to create new sounds and textures. Her piece "The Garden of Forking Paths," which was premiered in 1995, features a combination of acoustic and electronic instruments and explores the concept of multiple realities. In addition to her work as a composer, Bauld has also been active as a musicologist and educator. She has taught at several universities in the UK and Europe, and has published numerous articles and books on music theory, analysis, and history. Bauld's contributions to the world of classical music have been recognized with several awards and honors. In 1997, she was awarded the British Academy's Derek Allen Prize for Musicology, and in 2001 she was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts.
