Louis-Stanislas Xavier Verroust was a French composer and flutist who lived from 1814 to 1863. He was born in Lille, France, on April 17, 1814, to a family of musicians. His father, Louis Verroust, was a flutist and composer, and his mother, Marie-Josephine, was a singer. Verroust showed an early interest in music and began studying the flute with his father at a young age. Verroust's musical education continued at the Paris Conservatory, where he studied under the renowned flutist Jean-Louis Tulou. He won first prize in flute performance at the Conservatory in 1833, and later became a professor of flute at the institution. Verroust was known for his virtuosic flute playing, and his compositions for the instrument were highly regarded during his lifetime. Verroust's compositional output was primarily focused on works for the flute, although he also wrote music for other instruments and ensembles. His most famous works for the flute include his Concerto No. 1 in D major, Op. 61, and his Fantaisie sur des motifs de l'opéra La sonnambula de Bellini, Op. 46. Verroust's music for the flute is characterized by its technical demands and lyrical melodies, and his works were influential in the development of the French flute school. In addition to his compositions for the flute, Verroust also wrote music for the stage. His opera La coupe du roi de Thulé was premiered at the Théâtre Lyrique in Paris in 1853, and his ballet La filleule des fées was performed at the Paris Opera in 1858. Verroust's music for the stage was well-received, and he was praised for his ability to write music that was both dramatic and lyrical. Verroust's career as a performer and composer was cut short by his untimely death in 1863. He died in Paris at the age of 49, leaving behind a legacy of music that continues to be performed and studied today. Verroust's contributions to the development of the French flute school and his innovative compositions for the instrument have secured his place in the history of classical music.
