The Belgian National Opera Symphony Orchestra, also known as the Orchestre Symphonique de l'Opéra National de Belgique, is a renowned classical music ensemble based in Brussels, Belgium. The orchestra was founded in 1981 as the resident orchestra of the Belgian National Opera, which was established in 1951. The founding of the Belgian National Opera Symphony Orchestra was a significant milestone in the history of classical music in Belgium. Prior to its establishment, the country did not have a dedicated symphony orchestra that could perform at the highest level of artistic excellence. The orchestra was created to provide a world-class musical accompaniment to the productions of the Belgian National Opera, which was then under the direction of Maurice Huisman. The orchestra's first conductor was the renowned Belgian conductor André Vandernoot, who had previously served as the principal conductor of the Brussels Philharmonic Orchestra. Vandernoot led the orchestra for the first five years of its existence, during which time he established a high standard of musicianship and professionalism that has been maintained to this day. Over the years, the Belgian National Opera Symphony Orchestra has been led by a number of distinguished conductors, including Patrick Davin, Kazushi Ono, and Carlo Rizzi. Each of these conductors has brought their own unique artistic vision and interpretation to the orchestra, helping to shape its sound and style. The orchestra's current music director is Alain Altinoglu, who has been with the ensemble since 2016. Altinoglu is a highly respected conductor who has worked with some of the world's leading orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic and the Vienna State Opera. Under his leadership, the Belgian National Opera Symphony Orchestra has continued to thrive and grow, earning critical acclaim for its performances both in Belgium and abroad. One of the highlights of the Belgian National Opera Symphony Orchestra's history was its performance at the opening ceremony of the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, Spain. The orchestra was invited to perform as part of the cultural program for the games, and its performance was broadcast to millions of viewers around the world. The orchestra's performance was widely praised for its energy, precision, and musicality, and it helped to raise the profile of classical music in Belgium and beyond. In addition to its performance at the Olympics, the Belgian National Opera Symphony Orchestra has also been recognized for its artistic excellence with a number of awards and honors. In 2013, the orchestra was awarded the prestigious FEDORA - Rolf Liebermann Prize for Opera, which recognizes outstanding innovation and creativity in the field of opera. The award was given in recognition of the orchestra's production of the opera "La Juive" by Jacques Fromental Halévy, which was praised for its musical and dramatic intensity. The Belgian National Opera Symphony Orchestra has also been recognized for its commitment to promoting contemporary music. The orchestra has commissioned and premiered numerous works by Belgian and international composers, including Philippe Boesmans, Benoît Mernier, and Magnus Lindberg. These works have been praised for their originality and creativity, and they have helped to establish the orchestra as a leading force in the world of contemporary classical music.
