Role:ComposerPeriod:ContemporaryModernGenre:ConcertoKeyboardOrchestralSteen Pade was a Danish composer who was born on August 28, 1956, in Copenhagen, Denmark. He grew up in a family of musicians, with his father being a composer and his mother a pianist. This musical environment had a significant impact on Pade's early life, and he began playing the piano at a young age. Pade's musical education began at the Royal Danish Academy of Music in Copenhagen, where he studied composition with Ib Nørholm and Per Nørgård. He also studied electronic music at the Institute of Sonology in Utrecht, Netherlands, and at the IRCAM in Paris, France. Pade's early works were heavily influenced by the avant-garde and experimental music of the 1960s and 1970s. His compositions often featured unconventional instrumentation and extended techniques, such as using the body as a percussion instrument or incorporating found objects into the music. One of Pade's early works, "Klangfarbenmelodie," was written for a chamber ensemble and featured a unique instrumentation of flute, clarinet, violin, cello, piano, and percussion. The piece was notable for its use of timbre and texture, with each instrument playing a distinct role in creating a complex and layered sound. In the 1980s, Pade began to incorporate electronic music into his compositions. He was particularly interested in the possibilities of computer-generated music and worked extensively with computer programs to create new sounds and textures. One of Pade's most significant works from this period was "Computer Music," a series of pieces that explored the possibilities of computer-generated music. The pieces were created using a variety of computer programs and featured a range of sounds, from abstract electronic noise to more traditional musical elements. Pade's later works continued to explore the possibilities of electronic music, but also incorporated more traditional musical elements. One of his most notable works from this period was "Symphony No. 1," which was written for a full orchestra and featured a more traditional harmonic structure. Despite his success as a composer, Pade was also known for his work as a teacher and mentor to young composers. He taught composition at the Royal Danish Academy of Music and was known for his innovative and challenging approach to teaching. Pade's contributions to the world of classical music were recognized with numerous awards and honors throughout his career. In 1992, he was awarded the Carl Nielsen Prize, one of Denmark's most prestigious awards for composers. He was also awarded the Nordic Council Music Prize in 2001 for his contributions to contemporary music. Sadly, Pade passed away on December 18, 2016, at the age of 60. His legacy as a composer and teacher continues to inspire new generations of musicians and composers.More....
