Born on January 27, 1955, in Detroit, Michigan, akLaff grew up in a musical family and was exposed to jazz at an early age. His father was a jazz pianist, and his mother was a singer, which helped to foster his love for music. AkLaff began playing drums at the age of five and was soon performing with his father's band. He later studied music at the Detroit Institute of Technology and Wayne State University, where he honed his skills as a drummer and composer. During this time, he also played with local jazz musicians and began to develop his own unique style. He played with a number of notable musicians, including saxophonist Oliver Lake, pianist Andrew Hill, and trumpeter Wadada Leo Smith. He also formed his own band, the Decoding Society, which blended jazz with elements of funk, rock, and African music. In 1983, akLaff joined saxophonist Henry Threadgill's band, Air, which became one of the most influential groups in the avant-garde jazz movement. With Air, akLaff recorded several critically acclaimed albums, including "Air Lore" and "Montreux Suisse." He also played on Threadgill's Pulitzer Prize-winning album, "In for a Penny, In for a Pound." Throughout his career, akLaff has collaborated with a wide range of musicians and artists, including choreographer Bill T. Jones, saxophonist David Murray, and pianist Geri Allen.
