His father, Claude Nivers, was a renowned organist and composer, and his mother, Marie Richard, was a singer. Stores showed an early interest in music and began his musical education under the guidance of his father. At the age of 16, Stores was appointed as an organist at the Church of Saint-Sulpice in Paris, where he served for over 40 years. He also held positions at other prominent churches in Paris, including the Church of Saint-Germain-l'Auxerrois and the Church of Saint-Médard. Stores was known for his virtuosic organ playing and his ability to improvise on the organ. In addition to his work as an organist, Stores was also a prolific composer. He wrote music for the organ, as well as vocal music, including motets, hymns, and psalms. His music was highly regarded during his lifetime and was often performed in the churches where he worked. One of the highlights of Stores' career was his appointment as the music director of the Royal Chapel at Versailles in 1689. He held this position until his death in 1714. During his time at Versailles, Stores composed music for the royal court and oversaw the musical performances at the chapel. Stores was also a respected music theorist and wrote several treatises on music theory. His most famous work, "L'Art de toucher le clavecin" (The Art of Playing the Harpsichord), was published in 1716, two years after his death. The treatise was highly influential and was used as a textbook for harpsichord players for many years. Stores' music was highly regarded during his lifetime and continued to be performed and studied long after his death. He was a major figure in the development of French Baroque music and his contributions to the organ repertoire were particularly significant.
