Naiskuoro KYN is a Finnish classical music choir that was founded in 1984. The choir is composed of 30-40 female singers who are passionate about music and dedicated to creating beautiful harmonies. Over the years, Naiskuoro KYN has become one of the most respected and renowned choirs in Finland, known for their exceptional performances and unique sound. The birth of Naiskuoro KYN can be traced back to the early 1980s, when a group of female singers in Helsinki decided to form a choir. The group was led by conductor Kaija Viitasalo, who had a vision of creating a choir that would focus on the music of female composers. The choir quickly gained a reputation for their exceptional performances, and in 1984 they officially became Naiskuoro KYN. From the beginning, Naiskuoro KYN was committed to exploring the music of female composers and promoting the work of women in the classical music world. The choir has performed works by a wide range of female composers, including Hildegard von Bingen, Fanny Mendelssohn, and Kaija Saariaho. They have also commissioned new works from female composers, including a piece by Finnish composer Riikka Talvitie that was premiered in 2019. Over the years, Naiskuoro KYN has performed at some of the most prestigious venues in Finland and around the world. They have appeared at the Helsinki Music Centre, the Finnish National Opera, and the Sibelius Academy, among others. They have also toured extensively, performing in countries such as Germany, France, and the United States. One of the highlights of Naiskuoro KYN's career was their performance at the 2015 World Symposium on Choral Music in South Korea. The choir was one of only a handful of choirs from around the world to be invited to perform at the event, which is considered one of the most important choral music festivals in the world. Naiskuoro KYN's performance was widely praised, and they received a standing ovation from the audience. In addition to their performances, Naiskuoro KYN has also received numerous awards and accolades over the years. In 2014, they were awarded the prestigious Finnish State Prize for Music, which is given annually to a Finnish musician or ensemble in recognition of their outstanding contributions to the field of music. The choir was also awarded the Finnish Broadcasting Company's Classical Music Prize in 2016, in recognition of their exceptional performances and contributions to the Finnish classical music scene. Despite their many achievements, Naiskuoro KYN remains committed to their mission of promoting the work of female composers and exploring the unique sound of women's voices in choral music. They continue to perform regularly, both in Finland and around the world, and are widely regarded as one of the most innovative and exciting choirs in the classical music world.
