New Performance Group is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 1992 by a group of musicians who shared a passion for contemporary classical music. The group is based in New York City and has become known for its innovative and experimental approach to classical music. The founding members of New Performance Group were violinist Todd Reynolds, cellist Rubin Kodheli, and pianist Neil Alexander. They were soon joined by percussionist David Cossin and flutist Margaret Lancaster. Together, they began exploring new ways of interpreting and performing contemporary classical music. One of the group's early highlights was a performance at the Bang on a Can Marathon in 1993. This annual event, which takes place in New York City, showcases contemporary classical music and has become a major platform for experimental and avant-garde music. New Performance Group's performance at the marathon was well-received and helped to establish the group as an important player in the contemporary classical music scene. Over the years, New Performance Group has expanded its membership and repertoire. The group has collaborated with a wide range of composers and performers, including Philip Glass, Steve Reich, and Meredith Monk. They have also performed at major venues and festivals around the world, including the Lincoln Center Festival, the Edinburgh Festival, and the Holland Festival. One of the group's most notable performances was their 2005 collaboration with the Kronos Quartet. The two ensembles performed a program of contemporary classical music that included works by Terry Riley, John Zorn, and Michael Gordon. The performance was hailed as a triumph and helped to cement New Performance Group's reputation as one of the most innovative and exciting classical music ensembles of its time. In addition to their performances, New Performance Group has also received numerous awards and accolades. In 2001, they were awarded a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts to support their work. They have also been featured in numerous publications, including The New York Times, The Guardian, and The Wall Street Journal. Despite their success, New Performance Group remains committed to pushing the boundaries of classical music and exploring new ways of interpreting and performing contemporary classical music. Today, New Performance Group is led by Todd Reynolds, who serves as the group's artistic director. The ensemble's current members include violinist Courtney Orlando, cellist Ashley Bathgate, pianist Vicky Chow, and percussionist Doug Perkins. Together, they continue to push the boundaries of classical music and to inspire audiences around the world with their innovative and experimental approach to contemporary classical music.
