Nicholas Buc is a contemporary classical music composer and conductor, born in Melbourne, Australia in 1979. He grew up in a family of musicians, with his father being a jazz pianist and his mother a classical pianist. Buc began playing the piano at a young age and later learned to play the trumpet and guitar. Buc attended the Victorian College of the Arts Secondary School, where he studied composition and conducting. He then went on to study at the University of Melbourne, where he earned a Bachelor of Music degree in composition and a Master of Music degree in conducting. Buc’s early compositions were heavily influenced by jazz and rock music, but he later turned to classical music and began composing for orchestras and chamber ensembles. His works have been performed by numerous orchestras and ensembles around the world, including the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, and the London Symphony Orchestra. One of Buc’s most notable works is his composition for the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, titled “The Red Tree.” The piece was inspired by the children’s book of the same name by Shaun Tan and was premiered by the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra in 2010. The work features a narrator, who reads excerpts from the book while the orchestra plays music that reflects the story’s themes and emotions. Another notable work by Buc is his composition for the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, titled “The Unthanks: A Symphonic Tribute.” The piece was commissioned by the Sydney Symphony Orchestra and is a tribute to the British folk band The Unthanks. The work features arrangements of some of the band’s most popular songs, as well as original compositions by Buc. In addition to his work as a composer, Buc is also a conductor and has worked with numerous orchestras and ensembles around the world. He has conducted the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, among others. Buc is also known for his work as a film composer, having composed music for numerous films and television shows.
