Palmer Singers is a classical music ensemble that has been captivating audiences with their beautiful harmonies and exceptional performances for over 30 years. The ensemble was founded in 1989 by Dr. William Palmer, a renowned conductor and music educator, who had a vision of creating a group of talented singers who could perform a wide range of classical music. Dr. Palmer had a long and distinguished career in music education, having served as the Director of Choral Activities at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and the Director of Music at the First Presbyterian Church in Greensboro. He was also a sought-after guest conductor and clinician, having conducted numerous choral festivals and workshops throughout the United States and Europe. With his extensive experience and expertise, Dr. Palmer set out to create an ensemble that would showcase the best of classical music. He handpicked a group of talented singers from the Greensboro area, each with a unique voice and a passion for music. The ensemble started with just 12 members, but quickly grew in size and popularity. Over the years, Palmer Singers has had many talented members, each bringing their own unique style and voice to the group. Some of the main members of the ensemble include sopranos Susan Lyle and Mary Margaret Johnson, altos Karen Neff and Susan Frye, tenors David Blalock and David Weigel, and basses David Rice and David Weigel. Palmer Singers has performed at many prestigious venues and events throughout their career, including the National Cathedral in Washington D.C., the Biltmore Estate in Asheville, and the North Carolina Governor's Mansion. They have also performed with many renowned orchestras, including the Greensboro Symphony Orchestra, the Winston-Salem Symphony Orchestra, and the North Carolina Symphony Orchestra. One of the highlights of Palmer Singers' career was their performance at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, Georgia. The ensemble was selected to perform at the Olympic Village, where they sang a variety of classical pieces to an international audience. The performance was a huge success, and helped to cement Palmer Singers' reputation as one of the premier classical music ensembles in the United States. Palmer Singers has also received many awards and accolades throughout their career. In 1994, they were awarded the prestigious North Carolina Governor's Award for Excellence in the Arts, in recognition of their outstanding contributions to the cultural life of the state. They have also been featured on numerous television and radio programs, including NPR's "Performance Today" and PBS's "North Carolina Now." Despite their many accomplishments, Palmer Singers remains committed to their mission of bringing the best of classical music to audiences around the world. They continue to perform regularly, both locally and internationally, and are always looking for new ways to inspire and delight their audiences.
