Piotr Grella-Mozejko is a Polish-Canadian composer, pianist, and musicologist. He was born on August 23, 1961, in Gdańsk, Poland. Grella-Mozejko grew up in a musical family, with his father being a composer and his mother a pianist. He began playing the piano at a young age and showed a natural talent for music. Grella-Mozejko studied composition at the Academy of Music in Gdańsk, where he received his Master's degree in 1986. He then went on to study at the University of Alberta in Canada, where he earned his Ph.D. in musicology in 1995. During his time in Canada, Grella-Mozejko became a Canadian citizen and has since made Canada his home. Grella-Mozejko's compositions are characterized by their complexity and use of unconventional techniques. He often incorporates elements of Polish folk music into his works, as well as influences from other cultures. His music has been performed by numerous orchestras and ensembles around the world, including the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra, the Polish Radio Symphony Orchestra, and the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra. One of Grella-Mozejko's most notable works is his opera, "The Enslavement and Liberation of Oksana G.", which premiered in 2015. The opera tells the story of a Ukrainian woman who is kidnapped and forced into sexual slavery, and her eventual escape and liberation. The work has been praised for its powerful storytelling and emotional impact. Another notable work by Grella-Mozejko is his piano concerto, "The Passion of Angels", which was premiered in 2009. The concerto features intricate piano passages and a lush orchestral accompaniment, and has been described as a "tour de force" of virtuosity and emotion. In addition to his work as a composer, Grella-Mozejko is also a respected musicologist. He has written extensively on the music of Polish composer Karol Szymanowski, and has published numerous articles and books on music theory and analysis. Grella-Mozejko has received numerous awards and honors for his work, including the Alberta Foundation for the Arts Individual Artist Award and the Canadian Music Centre's Prairie Region Emerging Composer Award.
