Nicolai Parmae was a classical music composer born in Tallinn, Estonia on May 12, 1921. He was the youngest of three children born to a family of musicians. His father was a violinist and his mother was a pianist. Nicolai showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of four. He was a prodigious talent and quickly became known for his ability to play complex pieces with ease. As a child, Nicolai was exposed to a wide variety of music. His parents would often take him to concerts and recitals, and he would listen to recordings of classical music at home. He was particularly drawn to the works of Bach, Mozart, and Beethoven, and would spend hours practicing their compositions. Nicolai's parents recognized his talent and encouraged him to pursue a career in music. He began studying composition at the Tallinn Conservatory at the age of 16, where he was mentored by the renowned composer Heino Eller. Eller recognized Nicolai's talent and encouraged him to develop his own unique style. Nicolai's early compositions were heavily influenced by the works of Bach and Mozart. He was particularly interested in the use of counterpoint and would often incorporate complex harmonies into his pieces. His early works were well-received by audiences and critics alike, and he quickly gained a reputation as a promising young composer. In 1941, Nicolai's life was upended by the outbreak of World War II. Estonia was occupied by the Soviet Union, and Nicolai was conscripted into the Red Army. He served as a medic on the front lines, where he witnessed the horrors of war firsthand. Despite the difficult conditions, Nicolai continued to compose music whenever he had the opportunity. After the war, Nicolai returned to Estonia and resumed his studies at the Tallinn Conservatory. He continued to develop his unique style, incorporating elements of Estonian folk music into his compositions. His works became more experimental and avant-garde, and he began to gain a following among younger audiences. In 1950, Nicolai's career took a major leap forward when he won first prize in the All-Union Composers' Competition for his Symphony No. 1. The piece was hailed as a masterpiece and cemented Nicolai's reputation as one of the most talented composers of his generation. Over the next few years, Nicolai continued to compose prolifically, producing a wide variety of works in different genres. He wrote operas, ballets, chamber music, and orchestral pieces, each one showcasing his unique style and innovative approach to composition. One of Nicolai's most famous works is his opera "The Last Temptation," which premiered in 1962. The opera tells the story of a man who is tempted by the devil to abandon his faith and embrace a life of sin. The piece was controversial at the time of its premiere, but it has since become recognized as a masterpiece of modern opera. Another notable work by Nicolai is his Symphony No. 3, which premiered in 1968. The piece is a complex and challenging work that showcases Nicolai's mastery of counterpoint and harmony. It has been hailed as one of the greatest symphonies of the 20th century. Throughout his career, Nicolai remained committed to pushing the boundaries of classical music. He was never content to rest on his laurels and was always looking for new ways to innovate and experiment.
