He studied music at the Bucharest Conservatory, where he was a student of Mihail Jora, a prominent Romanian composer. After completing his studies, Roman Vlad began his career as a pianist and composer. He performed extensively throughout Europe and the United States, and his compositions were performed by many leading orchestras and ensembles. He was also a prolific writer and musicologist, and he wrote extensively on the music of his native Romania and other Eastern European countries.
