The Lubotsky Trio is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 2007 by three highly acclaimed musicians: violinist Mark Lubotsky, cellist Alexander Rudin, and pianist Anna Malikova. The trio has gained international recognition for their exceptional performances of chamber music, particularly works by Russian composers. Mark Lubotsky, the founder and leader of the trio, was born in Leningrad (now St. Petersburg) in 1931. He began playing the violin at the age of five and went on to study at the Leningrad Conservatory under the renowned violinist David Oistrakh. Lubotsky has performed with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the New York Philharmonic. He has also recorded extensively, with over 100 albums to his name. Alexander Rudin, the trio's cellist, was born in Moscow in 1960. He began playing the cello at the age of six and went on to study at the Moscow Conservatory. Rudin has won numerous awards for his playing, including the Grand Prix at the International Tchaikovsky Competition in 1982. He has performed with many of the world's leading orchestras and has recorded over 100 albums. Anna Malikova, the trio's pianist, was born in Moscow in 1966. She began playing the piano at the age of five and went on to study at the Moscow Conservatory. Malikova has won numerous awards for her playing, including the Grand Prix at the International Tchaikovsky Competition in 1989. She has performed with many of the world's leading orchestras and has recorded over 50 albums. The Lubotsky Trio was formed in 2007, when the three musicians came together to perform a concert in Moscow. The concert was a great success, and the trio decided to continue playing together. Since then, they have performed all over the world, including in Europe, Asia, and North America. One of the highlights of the Lubotsky Trio's career was their performance at the 2010 Edinburgh International Festival. The trio performed a program of works by Russian composers, including Tchaikovsky's Piano Trio in A minor and Rachmaninoff's Trio élégiaque No. 1 in G minor. The performance was highly acclaimed by critics and audiences alike, and the trio received a standing ovation. Another notable performance by the Lubotsky Trio was their concert at the 2012 Salzburg Festival. The trio performed a program of works by Beethoven, including his Piano Trio No. 7 in B-flat major, Op. 97 ("Archduke"). The performance was praised for its "exquisite musicianship" and "perfect balance." The Lubotsky Trio has also won several awards for their recordings. In 2011, they won the Diapason d'Or award for their recording of Tchaikovsky's Piano Trio in A minor. The recording was praised for its "passionate and intense" playing. In 2013, they won the International Classical Music Award for their recording of Shostakovich's Piano Trio No. 2 in E minor. The recording was praised for its "powerful and emotional" interpretation. In addition to their performances and recordings, the Lubotsky Trio is also committed to music education. They have given masterclasses at several universities and conservatories, including the Royal Academy of Music in London and the Moscow Conservatory. They are also involved in outreach programs, bringing classical music to underserved communities.
