Meir Finkelstein was a renowned classical music composer who was born on December 25, 1929, in Tel Aviv, Israel. He was the youngest of four siblings and grew up in a family that was deeply involved in music. His father was a cantor, and his mother was a pianist, which meant that music was always a part of his life from a very young age. Finkelstein began his musical education at the age of six when he started taking piano lessons. He showed a natural talent for music, and by the time he was a teenager, he was already composing his own pieces. He continued his musical education at the Rubin Academy of Music in Tel Aviv, where he studied composition with Paul Ben-Haim, one of Israel's most prominent composers. After completing his studies, Finkelstein began his career as a composer, and his works quickly gained recognition both in Israel and abroad. He was known for his unique style, which blended elements of traditional Jewish music with modern classical music. His compositions were often inspired by Jewish folklore and biblical stories, and he was particularly interested in exploring the relationship between music and spirituality. One of Finkelstein's most famous works is his oratorio "The Song of Songs," which was composed in 1962. The piece is based on the biblical book of the same name and is considered one of the most significant works of Israeli classical music. The oratorio features a choir, soloists, and an orchestra, and it has been performed by many of the world's leading orchestras and choirs. Another notable work by Finkelstein is his "Symphony No. 2," which was composed in 1972. The symphony is a tribute to the victims of the Holocaust and is a deeply emotional and powerful work. It features a large orchestra and is divided into three movements, each of which explores a different aspect of the Holocaust. Throughout his career, Finkelstein received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to classical music. In 1980, he was awarded the Israel Prize, which is the country's highest honor for achievement in the arts and sciences. He was also awarded the ACUM Prize for Lifetime Achievement in Music in 2001. Finkelstein continued to compose music until his death in 2016 at the age of 86. His legacy as one of Israel's most significant composers lives on through his works, which continue to be performed and celebrated around the world.
