Ilona studied at the Franz Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest, where she received a degree in piano performance. She also studied composition with her father and with Zoltán Kodály, a renowned Hungarian composer and music educator. Kodály's influence can be heard in Ilona's compositions, which often incorporate Hungarian folk music and rhythms. Ilona began her career as a pianist, performing in Hungary and throughout Europe. She also began composing music, and her works were performed by leading orchestras and ensembles in Hungary and abroad. In 1960, she won first prize in the International Composition Competition in Vienna for her String Quartet No. 1.
