The Florida International University Concert Choir is a renowned classical music ensemble that has been captivating audiences with their exceptional performances for over three decades. The choir was founded in 1986 by Dr. Jo-Michael Scheibe, who served as its director until 1994. Since then, the choir has been led by several distinguished conductors, including Dr. Kathryn K. Longo, Dr. Karen Kennedy, and Dr. Corin Overland. The choir is composed of talented singers from various academic disciplines at Florida International University, and they have gained a reputation for their exceptional musicianship, vocal technique, and expressive performances. Over the years, the choir has performed a wide range of choral repertoire, including works by Bach, Mozart, Brahms, and contemporary composers. One of the highlights of the choir's early years was their performance at the 1988 American Choral Directors Association (ACDA) National Convention in San Antonio, Texas. This was a significant achievement for the choir, as they were one of only a few university choirs selected to perform at the convention. The choir's performance was well-received by the audience and received critical acclaim from music critics. In 1994, the choir was invited to perform at the International Choral Festival in Cork, Ireland. This was a significant milestone for the choir, as it was their first international performance. The choir's performance was a resounding success, and they received a standing ovation from the audience. This performance helped to establish the choir's reputation as one of the premier university choirs in the United States. In 2001, the choir was invited to perform at the ACDA Southern Division Convention in Nashville, Tennessee. This was another significant achievement for the choir, as they were one of only a few university choirs selected to perform at the convention. The choir's performance was once again well-received by the audience and received critical acclaim from music critics. In 2006, the choir was invited to perform at the ACDA National Convention in Miami, Florida. This was a significant honor for the choir, as they were selected to perform in their home state. The choir's performance was a highlight of the convention, and they received a standing ovation from the audience. This performance helped to solidify the choir's reputation as one of the premier university choirs in the United States. In addition to their performances at national and international conventions, the choir has also performed at prestigious venues such as Carnegie Hall in New York City and the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. These performances have helped to establish the choir's reputation as one of the premier choral ensembles in the world. Over the years, the choir has received numerous awards and accolades for their exceptional performances. In 1998, the choir was awarded the ACDA Southern Division Convention Performance Award, which is given to the top university choir in the southern region of the United States. In 2003, the choir was awarded the ACDA National Convention Performance Award, which is given to the top university choir in the United States. In addition to their performances and awards, the choir is also committed to community outreach and education. They regularly perform at local schools and community events, and they have established a choral music education program for underprivileged children in the Miami area.
