Isadore de Lara was a British composer of classical music who was born on October 15, 1858, in London, England. He was the son of a Spanish father and an English mother, and his family was well-known in the artistic circles of London. His father, Joseph Lara, was a painter, and his mother, Elizabeth, was a singer and pianist. De Lara showed an early interest in music and began studying the piano at a young age. He was a prodigious talent and quickly became known for his virtuosic playing. He also showed an interest in composition and began writing music when he was just a teenager. In 1876, de Lara entered the Royal Academy of Music in London, where he studied composition with Arthur Sullivan and piano with Oscar Beringer. He was a brilliant student and won numerous awards and prizes during his time at the academy. After graduating from the Royal Academy of Music, de Lara began a successful career as a concert pianist. He performed throughout Europe and was known for his passionate and expressive playing. However, he continued to compose music throughout his career and eventually became more focused on composition than performance. De Lara's music was heavily influenced by the Romantic composers of the 19th century, particularly Franz Liszt and Richard Wagner. His compositions were known for their lush harmonies, sweeping melodies, and dramatic flair. He was also interested in incorporating elements of Spanish music into his works, reflecting his heritage. One of de Lara's most famous works is his opera Messaline, which premiered in 1899. The opera tells the story of the Roman empress Messalina, who is notorious for her promiscuity and political intrigue. The opera was a critical and commercial success and was performed throughout Europe. De Lara also composed a number of orchestral works, including his Symphony in A minor, which premiered in 1895. The symphony is a dramatic and emotional work that showcases de Lara's skill as a composer. He also wrote a number of chamber works, including his Piano Trio in B minor, which is considered one of his finest compositions. In addition to his work as a composer, de Lara was also a respected music critic. He wrote for a number of publications, including The Musical Times and The Daily Telegraph. He was known for his insightful and thoughtful reviews, and his writing helped to shape the musical landscape of his time. De Lara continued to compose music throughout his life, but his later works were not as well-received as his earlier ones. He died on November 13, 1935, in Paris, France, at the age of 77. Despite his later struggles, de Lara remains an important figure in the history of classical music, and his works continue to be performed and appreciated today.
