The All-Soldier Orchestra is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 2018. The ensemble is made up of active-duty soldiers from the United States Army who are also accomplished musicians. The All-Soldier Orchestra is a unique ensemble in that it is the only orchestra in the world made up entirely of active-duty soldiers. The idea for the All-Soldier Orchestra came from Colonel Andrew J. Esch, who is the commander of the United States Army Band "Pershing's Own." Colonel Esch wanted to create an ensemble that would showcase the musical talents of soldiers in the Army and also serve as a way to promote the Army's mission and values. The All-Soldier Orchestra is made up of soldiers who are selected through a rigorous audition process. The soldiers who are selected to be a part of the ensemble are not only talented musicians, but they also have a strong commitment to the Army's values and mission. The main members of the All-Soldier Orchestra are the musicians themselves, who come from all over the United States and have a wide range of musical backgrounds. The ensemble is led by conductor Colonel Timothy J. Holtan, who is also the commander of the United States Army Field Band. Since its founding, the All-Soldier Orchestra has performed at a number of high-profile events and venues. One of the ensemble's first major performances was at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. in 2018. The ensemble also performed at the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C. in 2019. In addition to these performances, the All-Soldier Orchestra has also performed at a number of military events and ceremonies. The ensemble has performed at the Pentagon, the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, and at military bases around the country. The All-Soldier Orchestra has received a number of awards and accolades for its performances. In 2019, the ensemble was awarded the Colonel George S. Howard Citation of Musical Excellence for Military Concert Bands, which is one of the highest honors that a military band can receive. The All-Soldier Orchestra is also committed to community outreach and education.
