He grew up in a family of musicians, with his father being a renowned pianist and his mother a violinist. From a young age, Appelt showed a keen interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of four. Appelt's talent was quickly recognized, and he began receiving formal training in piano and music theory. He attended the Berlin University of the Arts, where he studied under the tutelage of renowned pianist and composer, Karl-Heinz Kämmerling. During his time at the university, Appelt began to develop a passion for classical music and began to explore different genres and styles. He was particularly drawn to the works of Beethoven, Mozart, and Chopin, and spent countless hours studying their compositions and techniques. After completing his studies, Appelt began performing professionally, and quickly gained a reputation as a talented and versatile pianist. He performed in numerous concerts and recitals throughout Germany, and soon began to receive invitations to perform internationally. One of Appelt's most notable performances was at the Berlin Philharmonic in 1992, where he performed Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 5, also known as the "Emperor" concerto.
