The Slovak Philharmonic Orchestra & Chorus is a renowned classical music ensemble based in Bratislava, Slovakia. The ensemble has a rich history dating back to the early 20th century, and has established itself as one of the leading orchestras in Central Europe. The Slovak Philharmonic Orchestra was founded in 1949, following the establishment of the Slovak Republic as an independent state. The orchestra was initially formed as a radio orchestra, and was later expanded to become a full symphony orchestra. The ensemble quickly gained a reputation for its high-quality performances, and began touring internationally in the 1950s. Over the years, the Slovak Philharmonic Orchestra has been led by a number of distinguished conductors, including Ladislav Slovák, Libor Pešek, and Zdeněk Košler. The orchestra has also collaborated with many renowned soloists, including pianist Rudolf Firkušný, violinist Pinchas Zukerman, and cellist Yo-Yo Ma. In addition to its orchestral performances, the Slovak Philharmonic also has a chorus, which was founded in 1946. The chorus has performed a wide range of choral works, including works by Bach, Mozart, and Verdi. The chorus has also collaborated with the orchestra on many occasions, including performances of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony and Mahler's Eighth Symphony. One of the highlights of the Slovak Philharmonic's history was its performance at the 1964 World's Fair in New York City. The orchestra was invited to perform as part of the Czechoslovakian pavilion, and gave a series of concerts that were widely praised by critics and audiences alike. The ensemble's performance of Dvořák's New World Symphony was particularly well-received, and helped to establish the orchestra's reputation on the international stage. In the years that followed, the Slovak Philharmonic continued to tour extensively, performing in many of the world's leading concert halls. The ensemble also recorded extensively, releasing recordings of works by composers such as Beethoven, Brahms, and Tchaikovsky. In 1989, following the fall of communism in Czechoslovakia, the Slovak Philharmonic underwent a period of transition. The orchestra was restructured, and a new generation of musicians and conductors took over. Under the leadership of conductors such as Bystrik Rezucha and Ondrej Lenárd, the orchestra continued to thrive, and its reputation continued to grow. In recent years, the Slovak Philharmonic has continued to perform at the highest level, and has received numerous awards and accolades. In 2017, the ensemble was awarded the prestigious ECHO Klassik award for its recording of Shostakovich's Symphony No. 5. The orchestra has also been recognized for its commitment to contemporary music, and has premiered works by many leading composers, including Sofia Gubaidulina and Peter Eötvös. Today, the Slovak Philharmonic Orchestra & Chorus remains one of the leading classical music ensembles in Central Europe. With a rich history and a commitment to excellence, the ensemble continues to inspire audiences around the world with its performances of the great works of the classical repertoire.
