Ensemble Arpeggio is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 2005 in the city of Vienna, Austria. The ensemble is known for its unique blend of classical and contemporary music, and its ability to captivate audiences with its dynamic performances. The founding members of Ensemble Arpeggio were violinist Maria Schleuning, cellist Jolyon Pegis, and pianist Andrey Ponochevny. All three musicians had extensive experience performing in various orchestras and ensembles, and they shared a passion for exploring new and innovative approaches to classical music. From the beginning, Ensemble Arpeggio set out to create a repertoire that would showcase their individual talents and highlight their collective strengths as a group. They began by performing works by classical composers such as Mozart, Beethoven, and Brahms, but soon expanded their repertoire to include contemporary pieces by composers such as John Adams, Philip Glass, and Arvo Pärt. One of the highlights of Ensemble Arpeggio's early career was their performance at the 2006 Salzburg Festival, where they received critical acclaim for their interpretation of Mozart's Piano Trio in B-flat major. This performance helped to establish the ensemble as a rising star in the classical music world, and they soon began receiving invitations to perform at major venues and festivals around the world. Over the years, Ensemble Arpeggio has undergone some changes in its membership, but the core trio of Schleuning, Pegis, and Ponochevny has remained intact. They have also collaborated with a number of other musicians and composers, including violinist Jennifer Koh, cellist Matt Haimovitz, and composer John Corigliano. One of the ensemble's most notable collaborations was with Corigliano, who wrote a piece specifically for Ensemble Arpeggio called "The Red Violin Caprices." This work was inspired by Corigliano's score for the film "The Red Violin," and it showcases the ensemble's virtuosity and versatility. Ensemble Arpeggio has also been recognized for its outstanding performances and recordings. In 2010, they received the Chamber Music America/ASCAP Award for Adventurous Programming, which recognizes ensembles that demonstrate a commitment to exploring new and innovative approaches to classical music. In addition to their performances and recordings, Ensemble Arpeggio is also committed to education and outreach. They have conducted masterclasses and workshops for young musicians around the world, and they have worked with organizations such as the Sphinx Organization and the Dallas Symphony Orchestra's Young Strings program to promote diversity and inclusion in classical music. Overall, Ensemble Arpeggio is a dynamic and innovative ensemble that has made a significant impact on the classical music world. With their unique blend of classical and contemporary music, their commitment to education and outreach, and their outstanding performances and recordings, they are sure to continue inspiring audiences for years to come.
