The Alabama Symphony Orchestra (ASO) is a classical music ensemble based in Birmingham, Alabama. Founded in 1921, the ASO has a rich history of providing high-quality performances to audiences in Alabama and beyond. The ASO was originally founded as the Birmingham Symphony Orchestra by a group of local musicians and music lovers. The orchestra's first concert was held on October 18, 1921, and was conducted by local musician and composer, Arthur L. Foley. Over the years, the orchestra grew in size and reputation, and in 1944, it was officially renamed the Alabama Symphony Orchestra. Throughout its history, the ASO has been led by a number of talented conductors, including Paul Polivnick, Justin Brown, and Carlos Izcaray. Under their leadership, the orchestra has performed a wide range of classical music, from the works of Beethoven and Mozart to contemporary pieces by living composers. One of the ASO's most notable performances was its 1993 concert at Carnegie Hall in New York City. The concert, which was conducted by Paul Polivnick, featured works by American composers Samuel Barber and Aaron Copland, as well as Beethoven's Symphony No. 7. The performance was well-received by both audiences and critics, and helped to establish the ASO as a major player in the classical music world. In addition to its performances, the ASO has also been recognized for its educational and outreach programs. The orchestra's Symphony Volunteer Council, for example, provides support for music education programs in local schools, while its Sound Edge Festival brings together young musicians from across the state for a week-long music camp. Over the years, the ASO has received numerous awards and accolades for its performances and contributions to the community. In 2015, the orchestra was awarded the ASCAP Award for Adventurous Programming, which recognizes ensembles that take risks and showcase new and innovative works. The ASO has also been recognized by the National Endowment for the Arts and the League of American Orchestras for its commitment to music education and community outreach. Today, the ASO continues to be a vital part of the classical music scene in Alabama and beyond. With a talented group of musicians and a commitment to excellence, the orchestra is sure to continue delighting audiences for years to come.
