The ensemble was founded in 1985 by Dr. Paul Vaillancourt, who is also the current director of the group. The ensemble comprises of talented percussionists who are students of the Schwob School of Music at Columbus State University. The ensemble has had a number of members over the years, but some of the main members who have been with the group for a long time include Dr. Paul Vaillancourt, Dr. Brian Mason, Dr. Paul Stevens, Dr. Andrew Zohn, and Dr. Jamie Lipton. The Columbus State University Percussion Ensemble has performed at numerous prestigious venues and events across the United States and around the world. Some of the highlights of their major performances include their appearance at the Percussive Arts Society International Convention in 1990, 1994, 1998, 2002, 2006, 2010, 2014, and 2018. They have also performed at the Midwest Clinic in Chicago, the National Conference on Percussion Pedagogy, and the International Festival of Percussion Ensembles in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The ensemble has also been recognized for their outstanding performances and has received numerous awards and accolades over the years. In 1996, they won the PAS International Percussion Ensemble Competition, and in 2002, they were awarded the PAS Outstanding Collegiate Percussion Ensemble Award. They have also been featured on several recordings, including their debut album "The Columbus State University Percussion Ensemble" in 1990, and their most recent album "The Columbus State University Percussion Ensemble: 30th Anniversary Celebration" in 2015. The Columbus State University Percussion Ensemble is known for their innovative and diverse repertoire, which includes classical, contemporary, and world music.
