Camillo Zanotti was an Italian composer of the Baroque era, born in Bergamo in 1590. He was the son of a musician and began his musical education at a young age, studying with his father and later with the renowned composer Giovanni Battista Bassani. Zanotti's early works were primarily vocal compositions, including motets and madrigals. He also wrote instrumental music, such as sonatas and canzonas, but it was his vocal works that gained him recognition in his early career. In 1620, Zanotti was appointed maestro di cappella at the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore in Bergamo, a position he held for over 30 years. During this time, he composed numerous sacred works for the church, including masses, psalms, and hymns. One of Zanotti's most famous works is his Missa in illo tempore, a mass for four voices and basso continuo. This work is notable for its use of chromaticism and dissonance, which were unusual for the time. Zanotti's use of these techniques was influenced by the music of the Venetian school, particularly the works of Claudio Monteverdi. Zanotti's music was also influenced by the emerging operatic style of the time. He wrote several operas, including La finta pazza, which was performed in Bergamo in 1630. This work was notable for its use of recitative, a style of singing that imitates speech and is used to advance the plot in opera. In addition to his work as a composer, Zanotti was also a respected music teacher. He taught at the Accademia Carrara in Bergamo, where his students included the composer Giovanni Battista Mazzaferrata. Zanotti's later works show a shift towards a more conservative style, with a focus on counterpoint and the use of traditional forms such as the fugue. This change in style was likely influenced by the growing popularity of the Baroque style, which emphasized complex polyphony and virtuosic instrumental writing. Zanotti died in Bergamo in 1662, leaving behind a legacy of innovative and influential music. His works were highly regarded in his lifetime and continue to be performed and studied today.
