Role:EnsembleThe Loma Mar Quartet is a renowned classical music ensemble that has been captivating audiences with their exceptional performances for over three decades. The quartet was founded in 1985 by four talented musicians who shared a passion for chamber music and a desire to create a unique sound that would set them apart from other ensembles. The founding members of the Loma Mar Quartet were David McCarroll (violin), David Kim (violin), Jonathan Vinocour (viola), and Christopher Costanza (cello). All four musicians had impressive credentials and had already established themselves as accomplished performers in their own right. McCarroll had studied at the Juilliard School and had performed with the New York Philharmonic, while Kim had been a member of the Houston Symphony and the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. Vinocour had studied at the Curtis Institute of Music and had performed with the San Francisco Symphony, and Costanza had studied at the New England Conservatory and had performed with the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra. The quartet took its name from the small town of Loma Mar, California, where they had first rehearsed together. The town was located in the Santa Cruz Mountains and was known for its natural beauty and peaceful surroundings. The quartet felt that the name Loma Mar captured the essence of their music, which they described as "intense, yet serene." From the beginning, the Loma Mar Quartet was committed to exploring the full range of the chamber music repertoire, from the classics of Mozart and Beethoven to the contemporary works of living composers. They were known for their innovative programming, which often included lesser-known works that they felt deserved greater recognition. They also collaborated with other musicians and artists, including dancers and visual artists, to create multimedia performances that were both engaging and thought-provoking. Over the years, the Loma Mar Quartet has performed at some of the world's most prestigious concert halls and festivals, including Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, the Ravinia Festival, and the Edinburgh Festival. They have also recorded numerous albums, including works by Beethoven, Brahms, and Shostakovich, as well as contemporary composers such as John Adams and Philip Glass. One of the highlights of the Loma Mar Quartet's career was their performance of the complete Beethoven string quartets at the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. The quartet spent several years preparing for this monumental undertaking, which involved performing all 16 of Beethoven's string quartets over the course of several concerts. The performances were hailed as a triumph, with critics praising the quartet's "impeccable technique" and "deep emotional resonance." Another notable performance by the Loma Mar Quartet was their collaboration with the Mark Morris Dance Group on a production of Mozart's "Dissonance" quartet. The quartet performed live on stage while the dancers performed a choreographed interpretation of the music. The production was a critical and commercial success, and it was later adapted for television and broadcast on PBS. The Loma Mar Quartet has received numerous awards and accolades over the years, including the Naumburg Chamber Music Award, the Cleveland Quartet Award, and the Avery Fisher Career Grant. They have also been praised for their commitment to music education, and they have conducted master classes and workshops for students of all ages and levels.More....
