Johann Kropfgans was a German composer of the Baroque era, born in 1708 in the town of Würzburg. He was the son of a musician and began his musical education at a young age, studying with his father and later with Johann Melchior Molter in Karlsruhe. Kropfgans' early works were primarily instrumental pieces, including sonatas and concertos for various instruments. He also composed vocal music, including cantatas and oratorios, which were performed in churches throughout Germany. In 1735, Kropfgans was appointed court composer to the Prince-Bishop of Würzburg, where he remained for the rest of his life. During his time at the court, he composed a number of operas, including "La finta giardiniera" and "L'isola disabitata," as well as numerous instrumental works. Kropfgans' music is characterized by its elegance and lyricism, as well as its use of counterpoint and harmonic complexity. His works often feature virtuosic solo passages for various instruments, as well as intricate ensemble writing. One of Kropfgans' most famous works is his Concerto for Flute and Orchestra in G major, which is still frequently performed today. The piece showcases the flute's agility and range, and features a lively and joyful first movement, a lyrical second movement, and a lively and dance-like third movement. Another notable work by Kropfgans is his Sonata for Violin and Harpsichord in A major, which is a beautiful example of his skill in writing for both instruments.
