JacobTV is a contemporary classical music ensemble that was founded in 1993 by Dutch composer Jacob Ter Veldhuis. The ensemble is known for its unique blend of classical music, jazz, and pop, and has gained international recognition for its innovative approach to music-making. Jacob Ter Veldhuis, who goes by the stage name JacobTV, was born in 1951 in the Netherlands. He studied composition at the Amsterdam Conservatory and later went on to earn a PhD in musicology from the University of Amsterdam. He began his career as a composer in the 1980s, and quickly gained a reputation for his experimental approach to music. In 1993, JacobTV founded his eponymous ensemble, which initially consisted of himself on piano and a small group of musicians. The ensemble quickly grew in size and scope, and began to incorporate a wide range of instruments and musical styles into its performances. One of the defining features of JacobTV's music is its use of spoken word and found sounds. Many of his compositions incorporate recordings of interviews, speeches, and other spoken-word material, which are then manipulated and integrated into the music. This approach has been described as "sonic journalism," and has earned JacobTV a reputation as one of the most innovative and boundary-pushing composers of his generation. Over the years, the JacobTV ensemble has performed at some of the world's most prestigious venues and festivals, including the Holland Festival, the Edinburgh Festival, and the Lincoln Center Festival. The ensemble has also collaborated with a wide range of musicians and artists, including the Kronos Quartet, the Bang on a Can All-Stars, and the Dutch National Ballet. One of the ensemble's most notable performances was its 2006 concert at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. The concert, which was part of the center's "Nordic Cool" festival, featured a program of JacobTV's music that included several of his most well-known works, such as "Grab It!" and "Jesus Is Coming." In addition to its live performances, the JacobTV ensemble has also released several critically acclaimed recordings. Its 2004 album "Lipstick" was named one of the top classical albums of the year by The New York Times, and its 2010 album "The Body of Your Dreams" was nominated for a Grammy Award. The ensemble has also received numerous awards and honors over the years. In 2007, JacobTV was awarded the prestigious Grawemeyer Award for Music Composition for his piece "Grab It!" The award, which is one of the most prestigious in the field of contemporary classical music, recognizes outstanding achievement in composition. In addition to his work with the JacobTV ensemble, Jacob Ter Veldhuis has also had a successful career as a solo composer. His works have been performed by some of the world's leading orchestras and ensembles, and he has received commissions from a wide range of organizations and individuals. Despite its many achievements, the JacobTV ensemble remains committed to pushing the boundaries of classical music and exploring new and innovative approaches to music-making. With its unique blend of classical, jazz, and pop, and its use of spoken word and found sounds, the ensemble has carved out a distinctive niche in the world of contemporary classical music, and continues to inspire and challenge audiences around the world.
