He went on to study music at Virginia Commonwealth University, where he earned a Bachelor of Music degree in vocal performance. He then went on to earn a Master of Music degree from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. During his time at the University of Cincinnati, Ballentine began to make a name for himself in the world of opera. He performed in several productions with the Cincinnati Opera, including "The Magic Flute" and "La Bohème." He also won the Corbett Opera Scholarship, which allowed him to study at the prestigious Chautauqua Institution in New York. After completing his studies, Ballentine began to perform with opera companies across the United States. He made his debut with the Houston Grand Opera in 2015, playing the role of Sportin' Life in "Porgy and Bess." He also performed with the Santa Fe Opera, the Glimmerglass Festival, and the Lyric Opera of Chicago. In 2017, Ballentine made his debut at the Metropolitan Opera in New York, playing the role of the Messenger in "Aida."
