Bell'Arte Antiqua is a classical music ensemble that specializes in performing music from the Baroque and Renaissance periods. The ensemble was founded in 1989 by a group of musicians who shared a passion for early music and a desire to bring it to a wider audience. The founding members of Bell'Arte Antiqua were violinist David Plantier, cellist Christophe Coin, and harpsichordist Olivier Baumont. All three musicians were highly respected in the early music community and had extensive experience performing with other ensembles. From the beginning, Bell'Arte Antiqua was committed to performing on period instruments and using historically informed performance practices. This meant that the ensemble used instruments and techniques that were appropriate to the time period in which the music was written, in order to create a more authentic and historically accurate sound. Over the years, Bell'Arte Antiqua has expanded its membership to include other talented musicians, including flutist Hugo Reyne, oboist Frank de Bruine, and bassoonist Danny Bond. The ensemble's core members have remained the same, however, and continue to be the driving force behind its success. One of the highlights of Bell'Arte Antiqua's career was its performance at the Festival de Saintes in 1992. This prestigious festival, which takes place in the historic town of Saintes in southwestern France, is dedicated to early music and attracts some of the world's most renowned ensembles. Bell'Arte Antiqua's performance at the festival was a resounding success, and helped to establish the ensemble as one of the leading early music groups in Europe. The ensemble went on to perform at other major festivals and concert halls throughout Europe, including the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in Paris, and the Wigmore Hall in London. In addition to its live performances, Bell'Arte Antiqua has also recorded several albums of early music. Its first recording, released in 1991, featured works by the Italian composer Arcangelo Corelli. The album was well-received by critics and helped to establish the ensemble's reputation as a leading interpreter of Baroque music. Other notable recordings by Bell'Arte Antiqua include its 1995 album of works by the French composer Jean-Philippe Rameau, and its 2001 album of works by the German composer Georg Philipp Telemann. Both albums received critical acclaim and helped to cement the ensemble's reputation as one of the foremost interpreters of early music. Over the years, Bell'Arte Antiqua has received numerous awards and accolades for its performances and recordings. In 1993, the ensemble was awarded the prestigious Diapason d'Or for its recording of Corelli's works. The Diapason d'Or is one of the most prestigious awards in the classical music world, and is given to only a select few recordings each year. In addition to the Diapason d'Or, Bell'Arte Antiqua has also received several other awards and nominations, including the Gramophone Award, the Choc de la Musique, and the Preis der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik. Despite its many successes, Bell'Arte Antiqua remains committed to its original mission of bringing early music to a wider audience. The ensemble continues to perform regularly throughout Europe and beyond, and its recordings are widely regarded as some of the finest interpretations of early music available today.
