Alwin Nikolais was a renowned American composer and choreographer who revolutionized the world of modern dance. Born on November 25, 1910, in Southington, Connecticut, Nikolais was the youngest of four children. His parents were Russian immigrants who had settled in the United States. Nikolais showed an early interest in music and dance, and his parents encouraged him to pursue his passion. Nikolais began his formal training in dance at the age of 15, studying with the renowned choreographer and dancer, Hanya Holm. He also studied music at the Hartt School of Music in Hartford, Connecticut. Nikolais was a gifted musician and composer, and he began to incorporate his musical talents into his dance performances. In 1940, Nikolais moved to New York City, where he joined the Martha Graham Dance Company. He quickly became one of the company's most talented dancers and choreographers, and he began to develop his own unique style of dance. Nikolais was fascinated by the relationship between music and movement, and he began to experiment with new ways of combining the two. In 1948, Nikolais formed his own dance company, the Nikolais Dance Theatre. The company quickly gained a reputation for its innovative and experimental approach to dance. Nikolais was also a prolific composer, and he wrote music for many of his own dance performances.
