Shiva Feshareki is a British-Iranian composer and turntablist who has gained international recognition for her innovative approach to classical music. Born in London in 1987, Feshareki grew up in a family of musicians and was exposed to a wide range of musical styles from an early age. Her father was a composer and her mother was a pianist, and they encouraged her to explore her own musical interests. Feshareki began playing the piano at the age of five and quickly showed a talent for the instrument. She went on to study at the Royal Academy of Music in London, where she earned a degree in composition. During her time at the academy, Feshareki became interested in the use of turntables as a musical instrument and began experimenting with the technique. In 2012, Feshareki won the BBC Proms Inspire Young Composers’ Competition, which led to her being commissioned to write a piece for the BBC Symphony Orchestra. The resulting work, Gaba, was premiered at the 2013 BBC Proms and received critical acclaim for its innovative use of turntables and electronics. Since then, Feshareki has continued to push the boundaries of classical music with her unique approach to composition. Her works often incorporate elements of electronic music, improvisation, and live performance, and she has collaborated with a wide range of musicians and artists from different genres. One of Feshareki’s most notable works is her 2017 composition, Dialogue, which was commissioned by the London Contemporary Orchestra. The piece features a dialogue between a live orchestra and a pre-recorded tape, which Feshareki manipulates using turntables and other electronic equipment. The result is a dynamic and immersive sound experience that blurs the boundaries between acoustic and electronic music. Another highlight of Feshareki’s career is her ongoing collaboration with the London Philharmonic Orchestra. In 2019, she was appointed as the orchestra’s first-ever composer-in-residence, a role that allows her to work closely with the musicians and explore new ways of integrating turntables and electronics into orchestral music. Feshareki’s work has been recognized with numerous awards and accolades, including the Royal Philharmonic Society Composition Prize and the Paul Hamlyn Foundation Award for Composers. She has also been featured in a number of high-profile festivals and events, including the Venice Biennale and the Southbank Centre’s Meltdown Festival. In addition to her work as a composer, Feshareki is also an active performer and DJ. She has performed at clubs and festivals around the world, and her DJ sets often incorporate elements of classical and experimental music. Overall, Shiva Feshareki is a pioneering figure in the world of classical music, whose innovative approach to composition and performance has earned her a reputation as one of the most exciting and original voices in contemporary music. Her work continues to challenge and inspire audiences around the world, and she is sure to remain a major force in the music world for years to come.
