Charles Lloyd Barnhouse was an American composer and musician who was born on December 7, 1885, in Oskaloosa, Iowa. He was the son of a music teacher and grew up in a musical family. His father, Charles Barnhouse, was a well-known bandmaster and composer, and his mother, Mary Lloyd Barnhouse, was a pianist and organist. Barnhouse began his musical education at a young age, studying piano and violin with his mother. He later studied composition and orchestration with his father and attended the Chicago Musical College, where he studied under the renowned composer and conductor, Adolf Weidig. After completing his studies, Barnhouse began his career as a composer and arranger. He worked for several music publishers, including the C.L. Barnhouse Company, which was founded by his father. Barnhouse also worked as a bandmaster and conductor, leading several military and civilian bands throughout his career. Barnhouse's compositions were primarily for band and orchestra, and he wrote over 300 works during his lifetime. His most famous works include "The Thunderer," "The Gladiator," and "The Invincible Eagle," which are still popular with military bands today. Barnhouse was known for his innovative use of instrumentation and his ability to create complex and challenging music for bands and orchestras. He was also a skilled arranger, and many of his arrangements of popular songs and hymns are still performed today. In addition to his work as a composer and arranger, Barnhouse was also a respected music educator. He taught at several universities and music schools throughout his career, including the University of Illinois and the American Conservatory of Music in Chicago.
