Artist Info
Role:ComposerBirth:1886Death:1949Gustaf Nordqvist was a Swedish composer and organist who was born on March 12, 1886, in Stockholm, Sweden. He was the son of a music teacher and grew up in a musical family. Nordqvist began his musical education at a young age, studying piano and organ with his father. He later studied at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm, where he received a degree in organ performance. After completing his studies, Nordqvist worked as an organist and choir director in various churches in Stockholm. He also began composing music, and his early works were influenced by the Romantic style of the late 19th century. In 1912, Nordqvist won a competition for a choral work, which brought him national recognition. Nordqvist's music was characterized by its lyrical melodies, rich harmonies, and use of Swedish folk music. He was particularly known for his choral music, which included both sacred and secular works. His most famous choral work is "Jul, jul, strålande jul" (Christmas, Christmas, Glorious Christmas), which has become a beloved Christmas carol in Sweden. In addition to his choral music, Nordqvist also composed orchestral works, chamber music, and solo piano pieces. His orchestral works include a symphony, a suite for string orchestra, and a piano concerto. His chamber music includes a string quartet and a piano trio. Nordqvist's solo piano pieces are characterized by their lyrical melodies and use of Swedish folk music. Nordqvist's music was well-received in Sweden, and he was awarded several honors during his lifetime. In 1932, he was appointed a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Music. He also received the Litteris et Artibus medal from the Swedish government in 1946. Nordqvist continued to compose music throughout his life, and his later works showed a shift towards a more modernist style. He died on June 12, 1949, in Stockholm, Sweden, at the age of 63. Today, Nordqvist is remembered as one of Sweden's most important composers of the early 20th century. His music continues to be performed and recorded, and his choral works are particularly beloved by Swedish choirs and audiences.More....
