The French National Radio Chamber Orchestra, also known as Orchestre national de chambre de la Radio France, is a renowned classical music ensemble based in Paris, France. The orchestra was founded in 1978 by the French Radio and Television Broadcasting Company, commonly known as Radio France. The founding of the French National Radio Chamber Orchestra was a response to the need for a chamber orchestra that could perform a wide range of classical music repertoire. The orchestra was initially led by conductor and violinist Jean-Pierre Wallez, who served as its music director until 1993. Under Wallez's leadership, the orchestra quickly gained a reputation for its high-quality performances and innovative programming. Over the years, the French National Radio Chamber Orchestra has featured many talented musicians, including some of the most prominent soloists and conductors in the classical music world. Some of the orchestra's most notable members have included violinist Gidon Kremer, cellist Yo-Yo Ma, and conductor Kurt Masur. The French National Radio Chamber Orchestra has performed in some of the world's most prestigious concert halls, including the Royal Albert Hall in London, the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, and the Carnegie Hall in New York City. The orchestra has also collaborated with many renowned artists, such as pianist Martha Argerich, soprano Jessye Norman, and conductor Leonard Bernstein. One of the highlights of the French National Radio Chamber Orchestra's career was its performance at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. The orchestra was invited to perform at the opening ceremony of the games, where it played a piece composed by John Williams, the famous composer of film scores such as Star Wars and Indiana Jones. The French National Radio Chamber Orchestra has also received numerous awards and accolades for its performances and recordings. In 1985, the orchestra won the Grand Prix du Disque for its recording of Mozart's Piano Concertos with pianist Maria João Pires. The orchestra has also been awarded the Diapason d'Or, one of the most prestigious awards in the classical music industry, for its recordings of works by composers such as Bach, Vivaldi, and Beethoven. In addition to its performances and recordings, the French National Radio Chamber Orchestra has also been involved in educational and outreach programs.
