Capella de Música de Santa Maria del Mar is a classical music ensemble based in Barcelona, Spain. The group was founded in 1987 by conductor Jordi Casas Bayer and is named after the famous Santa Maria del Mar church in Barcelona. The ensemble is made up of a core group of professional singers and instrumentalists, with additional musicians brought in for larger performances. The group specializes in performing Renaissance and Baroque music, with a particular focus on the music of Catalonia and Spain. One of the highlights of the ensemble's early years was their performance at the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona. They were chosen to perform at the opening ceremony, where they played a selection of traditional Catalan music. This performance helped to raise the group's profile and led to more opportunities for them to perform on an international stage. Over the years, the ensemble has performed at many prestigious venues and festivals around the world. They have been invited to perform at the Festival Internacional de Música de Canarias, the Festival de Música Antigua de Úbeda y Baeza, and the Festival de Música Antigua de Aranjuez, among others. One of the group's most notable performances was their 2007 concert at the Palau de la Música Catalana in Barcelona. The concert was a celebration of the music of Catalan composer Joan Cererols, and featured a selection of his works performed by the ensemble and a choir of over 100 singers. The concert was a huge success, with the Palau de la Música Catalana completely sold out. In addition to their live performances, the ensemble has also recorded several albums. Their first album, "Música de la Catedral de Barcelona," was released in 1991 and featured music from the cathedral's archives. They have since released several more albums, including "Música de la Capella de Música de Santa Maria del Mar" and "Música de la Catedral de Tarragona." The ensemble has received numerous awards and accolades over the years. In 1998, they were awarded the National Music Prize by the Catalan government in recognition of their contributions to the preservation and promotion of Catalan music. They have also been awarded the City of Barcelona Prize for Music and the Medal of Honor from the Catalan Parliament. Despite their many achievements, the ensemble remains committed to their mission of preserving and promoting the music of Catalonia and Spain. They continue to perform regularly and are widely regarded as one of the premier classical music ensembles in the region.
