The orchestra was founded in 1945 by the Süddeutscher Rundfunk, a regional public broadcasting corporation, and has since become one of the most respected orchestras in Europe. The founding of the Orchester des Senders Stuttgart was a response to the devastation of World War II. The Süddeutscher Rundfunk recognized the need for cultural revitalization and established the orchestra as a means of promoting classical music in the region. The first conductor of the orchestra was Hans Müller-Kray, who led the ensemble until 1949. Over the years, the Orchester des Senders Stuttgart has been led by a number of distinguished conductors, including Sergiu Celibidache, who served as the orchestra's principal conductor from 1971 to 1977. Celibidache was known for his meticulous attention to detail and his insistence on long rehearsals, which resulted in performances of exceptional precision and clarity. Other notable conductors who have worked with the Orchester des Senders Stuttgart include Sir Neville Marriner, who served as principal conductor from 1983 to 1989, and Roger Norrington, who held the same position from 1998 to 2011. Under Norrington's leadership, the orchestra developed a reputation for its historically informed performances of Baroque and Classical music. The Orchester des Senders Stuttgart has also been home to many talented musicians over the years. Some of the orchestra's most notable members have included the violinist Wolfgang Marschner, who served as concertmaster from 1959 to 1990, and the cellist Heinrich Schiff, who was a member of the orchestra from 1971 to 1985. One of the highlights of the Orchester des Senders Stuttgart's history was its performance at the 1956 Salzburg Festival. The orchestra, under the direction of Hans Müller-Kray, performed Beethoven's Ninth Symphony to great acclaim. The performance was particularly notable for its use of a large chorus, which added to the grandeur and power of the music. Another memorable performance by the Orchester des Senders Stuttgart was its 1978 concert at the Berlin Philharmonic. The orchestra, under the direction of Sergiu Celibidache, performed Mahler's Symphony No. 2, also known as the "Resurrection Symphony." The performance was widely praised for its emotional intensity and its powerful interpretation of Mahler's music. In addition to its many performances, the Orchester des Senders Stuttgart has also received numerous awards and accolades over the years. In 2007, the orchestra was awarded the Echo Klassik award for its recording of Beethoven's Symphony No. 9, conducted by Sir Roger Norrington. The orchestra has also been recognized for its recordings of works by Brahms, Bruckner, and Schumann, among others. Today, the Orchester des Senders Stuttgart continues to be a leading force in the world of classical music. The orchestra performs regularly in Stuttgart and throughout Germany, and has also toured extensively throughout Europe and Asia. With its rich history and tradition of excellence, the Orchester des Senders Stuttgart is sure to remain a beloved institution for many years to come.More....
