She was born on December 22, 1930, in Lviv, Poland, which was then a part of the Soviet Union. Her parents were both musicians, and they recognized her talent for music at an early age. She began playing the piano when she was just four years old, and by the time she was six, she was already performing in public. Hesse-Bukowska's family moved to Krakow, Poland, when she was nine years old, and she continued her music education there. She studied at the State Music School in Krakow, where she was trained in both piano and violin. She showed exceptional talent in both instruments, but it was the piano that she ultimately chose to pursue. In 1949, Hesse-Bukowska enrolled at the State Higher School of Music in Krakow, where she studied under the renowned pianist and composer, Zbigniew Drzewiecki. She graduated with honors in 1954 and went on to pursue a career as a concert pianist. Hesse-Bukowska's career took off quickly, and she soon became one of the most sought-after pianists in Poland. She made her debut with the Krakow Philharmonic Orchestra in 1955, performing Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 3. Her performance was met with critical acclaim, and she was hailed as a rising star in the classical music world. Over the next few years, Hesse-Bukowska continued to perform with orchestras throughout Poland and Europe. She also began to record her performances, and her recordings of Chopin's music became particularly popular. In 1960, she won first prize at the International Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw, cementing her reputation as one of the world's leading interpreters of Chopin's music. Hesse-Bukowska's career continued to flourish throughout the 1960s and 1970s. She performed with some of the world's leading orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the New York Philharmonic. She also recorded extensively, releasing albums of Chopin, Beethoven, Mozart, and other composers. In addition to her performing and recording career, Hesse-Bukowska was also a respected music educator. She taught at the State Higher School of Music in Krakow, where she had studied, and she also gave masterclasses and workshops throughout Europe and the United States. Hesse-Bukowska's contributions to the world of classical music were recognized with numerous awards and honors. In addition to her win at the International Chopin Piano Competition, she received the Order of Polonia Restituta, one of Poland's highest honors, in 1974. She was also awarded the Medal for Merit to Culture by the Polish government in 1980. Hesse-Bukowska continued to perform and record well into her later years. She gave her final concert in 2005, at the age of 75, and retired from performing shortly thereafter. She passed away on January 28, 2010, at the age of 79.
