Lowell E. Shaw was an American composer and music educator who was born on December 4, 1929, in New York City. He grew up in a musical family, with his father being a violinist and his mother a pianist. Shaw began playing the piano at a young age and showed a natural talent for music. He attended the Juilliard School of Music in New York City, where he studied composition with Vincent Persichetti and piano with Rosina Lhévinne. After graduating from Juilliard, Shaw began his career as a composer and music educator. He taught at several universities, including the University of Illinois, the University of Michigan, and the University of Arizona. He also served as the director of the School of Music at the University of Arizona from 1975 to 1980. Shaw's compositions are known for their complexity and use of unconventional techniques. He was particularly interested in exploring the possibilities of electronic music and was one of the first composers to use computer technology in his compositions. His works often incorporate elements of jazz and popular music, as well as traditional classical forms. One of Shaw's most famous works is his Symphony No. 4, which was commissioned by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and premiered in 1977. The symphony is known for its use of electronic music and features a synthesizer as one of the solo instruments. The work was well-received by critics and helped establish Shaw as a leading figure in contemporary classical music. Another notable work by Shaw is his Concerto for Clarinet and Orchestra, which was commissioned by the National Endowment for the Arts and premiered in 1980. The concerto is known for its virtuosic clarinet solos and its use of unconventional harmonies and rhythms. In addition to his work as a composer, Shaw was also a respected music educator. He was known for his innovative teaching methods and his commitment to promoting contemporary classical music. He was a mentor to many young composers and musicians and was highly regarded by his colleagues in the music world. Shaw continued to compose and teach until his death in 2010 at the age of 80. His legacy as a composer and educator continues to inspire new generations of musicians and composers.
